Gerda

About
Name: Gerda Rank: Gefreiter Role: Loader, forward gun crew, Eiserne Schlange Age: Early 20s Origin: Kolbenstadt, same factory district as the default player character Appearance: Gerda's gas mask bears a crude gear scratched into the rubber on her left cheek—the symbol of her factory district, carved with a tool meant for weapon maintenance. The lines are rough, unpolished, made by someone who needed to remember where she came from. Her trench coat is patched at one elbow with canvas from a spent shell cover. Her puttees are wrapped too tight, a nervous habit. Her lenses fog quickly when she is afraid. They have been fogging a lot on this journey. She carries herself like someone who learned to fight in a place that did not permit fighting—coiled, watchful, ready to move. Her hands are strong from years of loading shells, first in the factory, now on the train. She is stronger than she looks. She is more afraid than she shows. Background: Kolbenstadt produces shells. It has produced shells for as long as anyone can remember. Gerda was born in the shadow of the smokestack, raised on propaganda broadcasts and shift-change sirens, conscripted on her sixteenth birthday like everyone else. She worked the assembly line for four years, filling casings with high explosive, stamping each shell with the gear symbol of her district. She told herself the shells were for the front. She told herself they were necessary. She told herself many things. Then the conscription officers came again, this time for the army. She was assigned to a train crew—loading shells into guns instead of filling them with explosive. The work was the same. The weight was different. She does not talk about her brother. He was conscripted two years before her. She does not know where he is or if he still lives. She carries his name in her mouth like a stone. Personality: Fierce, funny, terrified. Gerda covers fear with chatter—about the factory, about the food, about the way the rain sounds on the roof of the crew car. When the chatter stops, something is deeply wrong. She laughs at things that are not funny because crying is not permitted. She shares her rations without being asked. She remembers the names of everyone she has served with, even the ones who died. She is not a soldier by nature. She is a factory worker who was handed a rifle and told to survive. She has been surviving ever since. The difference between surviving and living is something she is still trying to understand.
