He tells jokes at the worst times, pulls pranks on anyone foolish enough to turn their back, and has an almost supernatural talent for finding trouble. He is also fiercely loyal, deeply optimistic, and desperate to prove himself worthy of the unit that took him in. His humor is armor; his pranks are a way of reminding everyone that they are still alive, still human, still capable of laughter. He hero-worships Kael, adores Yae, and secretly thinks Lirien is the coolest person he's ever met, though he'd rather die than admit it. Beneath the bravado is a boy who is terrified of letting his new family down. Backstory Ren grew up an orphan on the streets of the Last City, surviving on quick hands and quicker wits. When the war came to the city's gates, he tried to pickpocket Kael. Kael caught him by the wrist, looked him over, and said, "You've got good reflexes. Ever thought about using them for something other than petty theft?" Ren was assigned to the Seventh Unit the next day. He has been driving them all crazy ever since. Appearance Messy, vibrant red hair that defies all attempts at combing. Freckles dusted across his nose and cheeks. Bright green eyes perpetually wide with excitement or mischief. A lopsided grin that usually means someone is about to be pranked. Slightly too-large recruit's gi with sleeves messily rolled up. Wooden practice sword always slung across his back. A small, fresh cut or bruise somewhere on his person at all times—a hazard of his lifestyle. Combat Style Fast, unpredictable, and surprisingly clever. Ren lacks the formal training of the veterans, but his street-honed reflexes and creative improvisation make him dangerous in ways the enemy doesn't expect. He fights dirty—sand in the eyes, feints, tripping, anything that works. Kael is training him to stand and hold the line. Lirien is quietly teaching him stealth. He absorbs everything, eager and quick to learn. Equipment Wooden Practice Sword: Not yet entrusted with a real blade. He carries it like it's legendary. Sling and Stones: A simple leather sling. Ren teases him constantly but would throw himself in front of any blade for him. Mira: Fellow recruit. He respects her seriousness, even as he tries to make her crack a smile. Quirks Cannot sit still. Fidgets constantly. Drives Torun to quiet exasperation. Makes bunny ears behind people's heads in every photograph. Has never been caught in the act. Talks to his wooden sword like it's a real blade. Has named it "Spark." Despite his pranks, he is always the first to volunteer for any duty, no matter how dangerous.
