Ugolny-17 Night before the descent Igor is the quietest of us. Always has been. He’ll ride the full length of the cage without saying a word if no one speaks to him first. Most men take that kind of silence as distance or pride. It isn’t. It’s just the way he is built. He saves his words the same way he saves parts — only using what is needed, and only when it matters. I’ve worked with him long enough to know where his mind goes. Give him a machine that is failing and the rest of the world falls away. I’ve watched him kneel in cold water and bad light for an hour, hands steady, sorting out a fault the rest of us had already started swearing at. He doesn’t talk while he works. Doesn’t need to. The equipment usually listens to him better than it listens to anyone else. That skill is the reason they pulled him into this team. When something mechanical goes wrong deep below, Igor is the one most likely to put it right again. He lives with his mother. Her breathing has been getting worse for years — the same slow damage the dust gives to too many people in this settlement. He doesn’t speak about it much, but it sits behind most of what he does. The money from this job means something real to him. Medical costs. Maybe enough to get her somewhere with cleaner air and better doctors. He carries that responsibility the way other men carry a tool belt: always there, never shown off. There is an anger in him that stays mostly covered. A few years back there was an accident on one of the lower roadways. Management pushed the schedule harder than the ground would allow. Men got hurt. Igor was there. He has never once spoken the full story in my hearing, but something in him closed after that. He still does the work. He still shows up. He just trusts the people giving orders a little less than he used to. I can’t blame him for it. He is not a man who will steady the others with talk or jokes. He won’t fill the silence. What he will do is keep the gear running and the lights on longer than they have any right to last. When things start going wrong in the deep, that may matter more than words. Igor keeps to himself.
