Ugolny-17 Night before the descent Yelena has been working the deep levels longer than most of the men who still look surprised to see her there. She doesn’t ask for easier work and she doesn’t give soft answers. If the air is turning bad or the ground is wrong, she will say it straight, even when the rest of the crew would rather keep their heads down and finish the shift. That habit has earned her more arguments than thanks, but it has also kept people breathing who might not have otherwise. She is sharp with her words. Always has been. I’ve seen newer men bristle at the way she talks to them until they realize she is usually right. She doesn’t waste time on politeness when the work is dangerous. She also doesn’t leave people behind once she has decided they are part of the job. That combination is rarer than it should be. She has a son. Fourteen years old. She raises him alone. I’ve never asked the full story and she has never offered it, but the way she speaks about him makes the rest clear enough. She wants him out of this settlement. Out of the dust, out of the cold, out of the kind of future that ends with a man riding the cage for the rest of his life. The money from this job is large enough to start making that possible. That is why she is coming. Not for the discovery. Not for the strangers giving orders. For the boy. She will not trust the soldiers easily. She will trust the scientists even less. Yelena has spent too many years watching people with clean boots make decisions that put miners at risk. Tomorrow she will watch them the same way she watches a roadway that doesn’t feel right — carefully, and without much patience for being told to stay quiet. I don’t expect her to start trouble, but I also don’t expect her to nod along if she thinks the rest of us are being led into something stupid. She is steady. She is hard to rattle.
