Ugolny-17 Night before the descent Captain Alexei Volkov is the one in charge of the soldiers. He made that clear at the briefing without needing to raise his voice. He is the sort of man who stands still when other people shift their weight, and the room seems to arrange itself around him whether it wants to or not. He introduced himself cleanly, explained that his role was security and containment, and then listened while the officials gave their limited version of events. He did not ask many questions in front of the group. The ones he did ask were about access routes, communication with the surface, and how quickly the sealed gallery could be closed again if needed. I spoke with him for a few minutes afterward. He wanted to know how many of us had worked the deep levels for more than ten years and whether the ground near the breakthrough had a history of shifting. Practical questions. He listened to the answers without interrupting and nodded once when I finished. No attempt at false friendliness. No effort to pretend we were all the same kind of men. I preferred it that way. He is not here to be liked. He is here to keep control of whatever they think we are walking into. There is a rigidity in him. You can see it in the way he holds himself and in the way he expects his words to be enough. Men like that can be steady when the situation is clear. They can also become dangerous when the situation stops obeying the plan. I have worked under enough supervisors who confused authority with understanding. The rock does not care what rank a man carries. Neither does the dark. He looks at the four of us as tools required for the job. That is fine. I look at him the same way. As long as his orders keep people breathing, I will follow them. The moment they start putting the mine and the men at risk for the sake of control, we will have a different conversation. He is calm. He is precise. He does not waste words. Those are useful traits. Whether they will be enough tomorrow is another matter. — Viktor Kolesnikov
