Ugolny-17 Night before the descent Sergeant Roman Belov stands a step behind the captain in every room. That is the first thing I noticed about him at the briefing. He does not try to fill space. He watches, keeps his hands free, and waits for clear orders. When Volkov spoke, Belov listened like a man who had already decided the chain of command was the only thing that mattered. He answered when spoken to and otherwise kept his silence. There is nothing soft in the way he carries himself. I had a short exchange with him while the gear was being checked. He asked how often the lower roadways required extra support and whether the sealed gallery had any history of gas. Straight questions. He took the answers without comment and moved on. No attempt to be friendly. No attempt to assert himself either. He seems content to let the captain do the talking and to handle whatever comes after the talking is done. Men like him are usually reliable right up until the situation stops matching the plan. He strikes me as someone who is steady under clear instructions and less certain when the ground starts making its own decisions. I have seen that kind of soldier before. Good to have when the work is simple and dangerous in the usual ways. Less certain when the dark stops behaving the way anyone expected. He looks at the four of us as part of the job rather than as people he needs to understand. That is fine. I do not need him to understand us. I need him to keep his weapon pointed in the right direction and to follow orders that do not get the rest of us killed. If he can do that, we will have no problems. He is quiet, physical, and clearly loyal to the captain. Those traits will either serve us well tomorrow or become another weight to carry. We will find out which. — Viktor Kolesnikov
