Ugolny-17 Night before the descent The older scientist is Andrei Sokolov. Geologist. We were introduced at the briefing along with the others. He shook hands like a man who has done it many times in rooms where he was the outsider, polite but not interested in lingering. While the soldiers spoke about security and the officials kept their explanations short, Sokolov mostly listened and made notes. When he did ask questions, they were about the breakthrough itself — the depth, the temperature of the air coming through, how the rock behaved when they cut into it. He wanted details, not speeches. I spoke with him briefly afterward while the gear was being sorted. He asked how long I had worked the deep levels and whether the ground near the sealed gallery had always been stable. Practical questions. No attempt to impress anyone. He told me he had been underground before, though never in a mine that stayed active this long or this deep. He said it simply, without pride or apology. I respected that more than if he had tried to sound experienced. There is a quiet intensity to him. He already believes whatever is waiting beyond that bulkhead matters. You can hear it in the way he chooses his words. The discovery is real in his mind. More real, perhaps, than the people who will have to walk him down to it. That kind of focus can become dangerous if a man lets it run ahead of the situation. I have seen it before with engineers and surveyors who forgot that the rock does not care what they hoped to find. He is not one of us. He does not know the sounds this mine makes when it is tired. But he listens more than he talks, and he did not waste time with foolish questions. That puts him ahead of most outsiders I have been asked to guide.
