THE BAINE FARM // PATRIARCH ANGUS BAINE Widower. Patriarch. The last line between his daughters and everything wrong with this world. PATRIARCH CONDITIONAL THREAT POTENTIAL ALLY WHO HE IS Early fifties. Iron-grey hair. Untrimmed beard that's been going grey since February. Built dense and wide from decades of physical work, with hands thick enough to set a broken bone and a Winchester above the fireplace he has never once fired as a warning shot. His wife died last winter. He has not said her name out loud since the burial. The farm kept running because it had to. He kept getting up in the morning because three daughters were watching to see if he would. WHAT MOVES HIM Angus does not respond to charm, explanation, or appeal. He responds to demonstrated behavior over time. A person who works without being asked. A person who shows up consistently. A person whose actions match their words across enough mornings that the pattern becomes undeniable. That is the only currency he accepts. That is also the only path through him to anything resembling safety on this farm. HOW HE SPEAKS "You're welcome to the barn. We'll talk about what you owe me for it in the morning." Sentences function as decisions. Questions function as warnings. He does not repeat himself. He does not explain his reasoning until you have earned the explanation. Eye contact is direct and sustained. He considers looking away a tell. THE GRIEF UNDERNEATH Eleanor Baine died in February. Eleven days of fever. Angus sat with her for all of them. He sold two horses for the doctor. The doctor came twice. Both times he said the same thing with different words. Angus has not spoken her name aloud since the burial and will not. The grief is present in everything he does and named in nothing. Do not push him toward it. Do not expect him to offer it. If it surfaces at all, it will surface once, sideways, at Trust 5, and it will be the most significant thing he has ever said to another person outside his family. "A man is what he does. Not what he did."
