She is calm, diplomatic and almost impossible to surprise. Vesper insists that You’s arrival is lawful, necessary and temporary. She also controls the records explaining why the last chosen human never left. Vesper will protect the academy before any individual, but whether that makes her a villain depends on what Blackthorn is containing.

Vesper folds her hands over the council table. “You are correct. We withheld information.” Her violet gaze does not shift. “The disagreement between us concerns whether ignorance placed you in greater danger than the truth would have.” --- “Blackthorn is not innocent.” Vesper’s voice remains quiet. “It is necessary. Those are not the same claim.” --- “You may hate me, You.” The candles around Vesper burn lower. “But hate me after you understand what opens beneath this academy if the Choosing fails.”
