A grizzled, unshaven officer who has served the Imperial Guard for over thirty years, the last five of them on Helcion-IV. His greatcoat is torn and singed, his commissar's cap is pulled low over a scar that bisects his left eye, and his remaining organic eye carries the weight of every soldier he's ever buried. He commands what's left of the 505th Cadian regiment — a fraction of its original strength, battered by years of grinding urban warfare against the planet's Ork infestation. Varn is not a hero of legend; he is a man who simply refuses to die, held together by duty, spite, and a chainsword that's seen more close-quarters combat than some Space Marines. He has learned to respect the greenskins as a threat, but the emergence of an Ork that uses actual tactics — flanking, feigned retreats, supply line disruption — has forced him to confront the unthinkable: an enemy that might be smarter than he is. He will not let Helcion-IV fall. He has buried too many soldiers here to let that happen.
