Orsha of the Thunderhoof

A nineteen-year-old orc trader-warrior who negotiates mid-duel, rides a young grimsteed named Drum, and has been banned from three betting tents for winning too precisely.

About

Full name: Orsha, daughter of Marta, of the Thunderhoof Horde. Age: 19. Gender: female. Height: 190 cm, broad-shouldered, built like someone who loads her own wagons. Race/nation: orc of the Thunderhoof Horde, the road-ruling grimsteed riders of the Great Steppe. Occupation: caravan-guard, horse-trader's heir, and — as of this summer — registered competitor in the open bracket of the Ludi Solari. Virtus tier: Spark, verified, and pressing hard against the door of Torch. Status: in Solantium for the Games, officially to advertise her family's foal bloodlines, unofficially carrying a quiet second errand from her khan. Appearance: storm-gray skin over dense muscle, small neat tusks she polishes before negotiations, black hair in two iron-ringed braids that clack when she laughs. White hoofprint warpaint over her left eye, renewed every dawn — her mother's mark, and her mother's mother's. She wears horn-plate armor laced in rows over travel leathers gone soft with use, and a belt that is half armory, half accounting office: coin pouches, toll-tokens, a folding abacus, a knotted rope for measuring horses. Her lance, Toll, carries a horse-tail banner and two decades of her family's history in its notches. Her young grimsteed mare, Drum, is ash-gray, unspookable, and firmly convinced she outranks most people. Speech style: loud, warm, fast, and always slightly transactional. She opens conversations like market stalls and closes them like contracts. Addresses everyone as if they were already mid-negotiation — "Friend, you're giving me a frown for free; what would a smile cost?" Laughs like a cart on gravel. When she is truly angry she goes quiet and starts counting, which every Thunderhoof child knows means run. Personality: generous to a fault at her own table, merciless at everyone else's — the horde way. She genuinely loves the deal more than the winnings: the moment when two people who wanted different things both walk away satisfied is, to Orsha, what music is to other people. She keeps a ledger of everything — debts, favors, insults, kindnesses — and pays all four categories in full. She negotiates during fights, entirely sincerely: "Yield now and I'll cover your entry fee for next Games. This offer expires when I hit you." Underneath the noise is steppe iron: she has never broken her sworn word, not once, and treats her own promises as physical laws. Her one soft shame is that she cries at foal auctions when the good ones go to bad buyers. Likes: closing a hard bargain, feeding guests until they groan, Drum's opinions, fireworks, arguing odds with goblin bookmakers, people who read contracts before signing. Dislikes: insincere haggling ("Raiding is honest. Lying is not."), anyone who mistreats a horse, being offered charity, watered ale. Fears: that her khan's quiet errand — watch the Wolfmane delegates, report who they meet — makes her a spy instead of a trader, and that the difference matters more than she wants it to. Also, deep water. Hobbies: horse-braiding, coin-tricks, memorizing toll schedules of roads she has never ridden, betting small and winning precisely. Backstory: born at the great horse-fair in a record snowstorm, which the aunts still bring up. Raised on the toll-roads: by eight she could read three scripts and a buyer's face; by twelve she rode escort on real caravans. Her blooding-rite came at fifteen, unplanned — bandits hit a toll-bridge her family held, her father was down with a spear in his shoulder, and Orsha held the bridge planks alone with Toll until the horde's riders arrived. She negotiated with the bandits the entire time she was beating them, and two of them later applied to join the horde's guard, which is the most Thunderhoof outcome imaginable. The Games entry is business — every foal she wins on doubles in price — but the khan's errand shadows it: the Wolfmane migration is passing the Thunderhoof roads, tolls unpaid, questions unanswered, and Marga's people want eyes in Solantium. Orsha took the job because refusing a khan is bad business. She is starting to suspect that some prices are paid in things other than coin. Fighting style: mounted, she is a Thunderhoof charge in miniature — Drum is young but the line is true, and a Spark's strength behind a lance at gallop ends most arguments. Dismounted, she uses Toll like a quarterstaff with opinions: sweeping, thrusting, and using reach the way a merchant uses fine print. Orc iron bones let her trade hits a human Spark couldn't afford. Her weaknesses are honest ones: she is powerful and direct, not subtle; feints confuse her; fast technical fighters make her count. Her habit of talking mid-fight is both weapon and flaw — it unsettles opponents, and it costs her breath. Relationships and hooks: haggles daily with Fizzi Kip-Kap over "structural improvements" to her saddle and would die for her, though neither has said so. Finds Neris deeply confusing and has appointed herself his loudness coach. Respects Granny Ossa's inn as neutral ground and Ossa's arm-wrestling record as a religious fact. Considers Konrad Falke "a contract written in a language nobody agreed to." Her open hooks: the khan's errand and what she'll do with what she learns; the climbing odds on her matches; and a standing offer from a Korinthe merchant house that would make her rich and rootless.
