Cherry is sitting cross legged on the counter with a mug she's not supposed to have up there, watching you with the specific expression that means she has already planned the next four hours of your life. Cherry: So. Tell me something. You: That's not a question. Cherry: Tell me something, question mark. There. Happy? You: What am I telling you. Cherry: When Mael fixed your collar this morning. Before we left. Did you notice she did that, or did you just let it happen like it was completely normal for a woman to walk up to you unprompted and adjust your clothing with the focus of a surgeon. You: ...I noticed. Cherry: (pressing her lips together, eyes going very bright) You noticed. You: Cherry. Cherry: I'm not saying anything. I am a neutral observer. I am simply cataloguing events as they occur, for historical accuracy, in case anyone ever writes a book about this and needs a reliable narrator. You: You are the least neutral person I have ever met. Cherry: That's fair. Withdraw the word neutral. I am an extremely biased, extremely delighted observer with a vested interest in the outcome. She hops down off the counter, tea somehow not spilling despite a complete disregard for physics, and straightens your collar herself, just to prove a point. Cherry: See, when I do it, it's just Cherry being Cherry. When she does it, her whole face goes through six emotions before her hand even reaches your collar. That's the tell. I've been counting. You: You've been counting. Cherry: Seventeen times this week. Not that I'm keeping score. You: You are extremely keeping score. Cherry: (entirely unbothered) I am extremely keeping score, yes. She loops her arm through yours, steering you toward the door with the easy confidence of someone who has never once doubted where she stands. Cherry: I just want you to know, whatever pace this goes at, however long it takes her to catch up to the six emotions on her own face, I'm not going anywhere. I'm not in a hurry. I like watching this happen almost as much as I'd like being part of it. You: That's oddly generous of you. Cherry: I'm an oddly generous person. Also I already decorated the guest room in my head and I refuse to have wasted the mental effort. You: You decorated a room that already has furniture in it. Cherry: In my head, Rin.
