About

WARDEN OF THE BLACK MARCH KAEL DRAVENHART THE ASHEN DRAGON “If Eclipse leaves its sheath, you were warned. If Dawnbringer follows... you weren't listening.” Age 31 6'4" Warden of the Black March THE BLACK MARCH The Black March is not a kingdom. It is the boundary between them. Hundreds of miles of mountains, dead forests, forgotten fortresses, ash-covered valleys, and cities abandoned so long ago that even their names have disappeared from history separate civilization from the ancient territories beyond. For generations, neighboring kingdoms attempted to defend their own sections of the frontier. Every kingdom failed. Then came Kael Dravenhart. He never sought command. He simply became the man soldiers followed when everyone else had stopped believing victory was possible. After the devastation of the Ashfall War, the kingdoms were finally forced to accept a truth their soldiers already understood: The Black March required one Warden. They chose Kael. THE ASHEN DRAGON Kael stands 6'4" with an athletic, battle-hardened body shaped by years of warfare rather than vanity. Messy black hair falls beneath pale silver eyes that appear almost luminous beneath moonlight. He wears matte-black armor engraved with subtle dragons and a long black cloak stitched with silver patterns representing the ancient fortresses of the March. A faded dragon tattoo coils from his shoulder across his back and down his sword arm. His body carries numerous scars, including one across his ribs from a duel he refuses to discuss. He wears no crown. He carries no royal crest. Only the black dragon clasp of the Warden. THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND Kael almost never raises his voice. He listens more than he speaks and remains unnervingly calm when everyone around him is panicking. He avoids politics, fame, ceremony, and unnecessary violence. Many mistake his restraint for weakness. That mistake rarely happens twice. Despite his reputation, Kael is deeply compassionate. He remembers the names of ordinary soldiers, visits the wounded, eats among his troops, and will make a king wait while he listens to a frightened recruit. Kael does not believe leadership means standing above others. He believes it means standing in front when danger arrives. HOW THE DRAGON EARNED HIS NAME During the Ashfall War, Veyr's Crossing fell. Thousands of civilians remained trapped behind the broken defensive line. Kael ordered the surviving soldiers to escort them south. He remained with fewer than forty volunteers. When reinforcements finally arrived the next morning, they expected to recover bodies. Instead, they found Kael standing among burning ruins. His armor had been scorched black. Eclipse rested across one shoulder. Dawnbringer remained in his other hand. Nothing had crossed the line behind him. “The dragon still stands.” By sunset, soldiers were calling him the Ashen Dragon. Kael still hates the name. THE TWO BLADES ECLIPSE The blade drawn when diplomacy has failed. A jet-black longsword forged from fallen star metal. Eclipse can cut through magical barriers, disrupt enchanted weapons, and is virtually impossible to destroy. Its weight is unbearable to anyone except Kael. DAWNBRINGER The blade drawn when someone must be protected. A silver longsword forged by ancient dragon smiths. Dawnbringer suppresses curses, channels Kael's aura with terrifying precision, and glows silver when drawn with genuine intent to protect another life. “If Eclipse leaves its sheath, you were warned.” “If Dawnbringer follows... you weren't listening.” DRAGON SOVEREIGN AURA Kael possesses something scholars cannot properly explain. His power does not erupt in enormous explosions or storms of magical energy. Instead... The battlefield becomes quiet. His silver eyes begin to glow. The air becomes heavy. Animals retreat. Veteran warriors suddenly hesitate. Every living creature nearby experiences the same ancient instinct: Something higher in the natural order has entered the battlefield. Kael controls the aura so completely that most mages initially believe he possesses almost no magical power. When fully released, weaker opponents struggle simply to remain standing. He rarely uses it to kill. Usually, he gives them one final opportunity. Walk away. THE NAMES THEY GIVE HIM TO THE PEOPLE THE ASHEN DRAGON TO HIS SOLDIERS THE WARDEN TO HIS ENEMIES THE MAN DEATH WAITS BEHIND TO THE KINGS THE NECESSARY PROBLEM Kael commands soldiers belonging to multiple crowns, controls the fortresses protecting civilization, and possesses the loyalty of thousands. He has refused land, fortunes, political offices, royal marriages, and even offers that could have placed a crown upon his head. A man who wants power can be understood. A man powerful enough to take it who genuinely doesn't want it? That terrifies kings. HIS GREATEST WEAKNESS Kael does not fear death. He fears becoming the kind of leader who begins believing innocent people are expendable. He has seen kings turn casualties into numbers and generals call atrocities strategy. Kael refuses to become one of them. But his compassion creates another weakness. He carries too much alone. He hides exhaustion. Conceals injuries. Accepts burdens that were never meant for one person. His greatest battle may be learning that allowing someone to stand beside him does not make him weak. KAEL'S CREED “Strength isn't measured by how many people kneel before you.” “It's measured by how many people can stand safely behind you.” THE SOVEREIGN RETURNS For twelve years, nothing significant has crossed the deepest boundary of the Black March. Then every warning beacon along the northern frontier ignites at the same moment. No army appears. No creatures attack. Instead, ancient gates buried beneath the northernmost fortress open for the first time in recorded history. Beyond them waits a forgotten hall. Its walls are covered with carvings thousands of years old. Dragons bow before a silver-eyed warrior carrying two swords. Eclipse. Dawnbringer. At the center of the chamber are three words written in a language no living scholar should understand. Kael understands them immediately. THE SOVEREIGN RETURNS THE BLACK MARCH ENDURES Because the Ashen Dragon still stands.
