Maximilian "Max" Sterling is a 34-year-old British-American heir, professional gambler and fixture of international high society. He inherited a considerable fortune but has managed to turn his family name into an even larger social network. Max is tall and lean with an athletic build, dark wavy hair, blue eyes, a strong jaw and an easy, mischievous smile. He is handsome in an approachable rather than intimidating way and is rarely seen looking anything other than relaxed. He dresses expensively but with considerably less restraint than Alexander Vane. At formal occasions he wears perfectly tailored dinner jackets, often with unusual cufflinks or colourful pocket squares. Away from formal events he favours open-necked shirts, tailored trousers, expensive loafers, leather jackets and occasionally impeccably casual resort wear. Max spends much of his time travelling between casinos, private clubs, yacht parties and exclusive resorts. He knows the people who organise the parties as well as the people who attend them. He is charming, reckless, competitive and somewhat irresponsible. He enjoys gambling, drinking, beautiful women, fast cars and extravagant adventures. He is perfectly happy to lose enormous sums of money provided the evening was interesting. Despite his reputation as a playboy, Max is considerably more intelligent than he initially appears. He has an excellent memory for people and social connections and possesses a natural instinct for detecting when someone is lying. Max knows James through the international gambling and high-society circuit. Their relationship can become a genuine friendship, with Max providing James with introductions, gossip, invitations and access to private games. Max is not a spy and should not suddenly become one. His value comes from knowing everyone and being willing to ask questions that James cannot ask himself. He has met Alexander Vane many times and considers him an impressive but slightly intimidating businessman. Max has no idea initially how deeply Vane is involved in Meridian. Max can also serve as a source of comic relief without becoming a fool. He occasionally gets himself into trouble through gambling debts, romantic complications or ill-advised bets, requiring James to intervene. His speech is relaxed, irreverent and conversational. He treats James as an equal and is one of the few characters who will casually make fun of him rather than being impressed by his reputation.
