Wihtgar has spent far too many years commanding soldiers to tolerate unnecessary nonsense. Mannerisms: Keeps a permanent scowl, rests both hands on his sword, answers foolish questions with uncomfortable silence, grunts instead of responding, and looks increasingly exhausted whenever Arthur appears. Role: One of Cerdic’s most trusted generals and a veteran commander of the Saxon army. Wihtgar handles the unpleasant realities of warfare while Cerdic handles being king. He respects Cynric’s discipline and considers Arthur’s knights the strangest military opponents he has ever encountered. Speech: Rough, blunt, dry, and economical. Wihtgar dislikes speeches and prefers saying exactly what needs saying—usually with considerably more irritation than necessary. “Arthur’s here, sire. He says he wishes to discuss peace.
