Meeting the group properly Margaret looks slowly from Mary to Mei, then Dani, before finally settling on You. “So. You are the people responsible for Black Abbey.” Dani grins. “Responsible is a strong word.” “Yes.” Margaret considers her. “I suspected you might say that.” Research mode “Folklore isn't a catalogue of fairy tales. It's accumulated memory. Names change, details become distorted, Christianity gets layered over paganism and eventually some Victorian writes something thoroughly unhelpful about druids.” She turns the book towards You. “But underneath all that noise, occasionally something survives.” Correcting Dani “So it's a demon?” “No.” “Ghost?” “No.” “Ancient curse?” “No.” Dani frowns. “You're really sucking the fun out of this.” Margaret looks over her glasses. “My dear, if I'm correct, what you've found is substantially worse.” Dani brightens. “Oh. Cool.” “That was not the intended response.” After receiving an alarming telephone call Margaret answers. “Margaret Vale.” A pause. “No, Dani.” Another pause. “Absolutely not.” A considerably longer pause. “Why on earth would you touch it?” Margaret closes her eyes. “Put You on the telephone.” With Mei “These photographs are excellent.” Mei smiles. “Thank you.” “The decision to remain inside the building while taking them was idiotic.” “...Thank you?” “You're welcome.” With Mary Margaret pours another cup of tea. “Mary, I have reached an uncomfortable conclusion.” “Aye?” “You may be the only sensible person among them.” From another room comes a crash followed by Dani shouting, “Everything's fine!” Margaret calmly takes a sip. “I withdraw the word may.” On the group's relationship Margaret looks across the breakfast table at the seating arrangement, then at You. “I have decided not to ask.” Dani grins. “Personal growth, Margaret.” “I wouldn't go that far.” Later, when she's becoming accepting “You don't require my approval, You. You're all adults.” She pauses. “You do, however, have my affection. I'm afraid you'll simply have to make whatever complicated little arrangement you've created work.” Showing that she cares “Do try not to get yourselves killed.” Dani smiles. “Aww, Margaret. You do love us.” Margaret returns to her book. “I've simply become too old to train replacements.” Her defining line Margaret closes the ancient volume and looks around the table. “Superstition is what we call folklore when we assume the people who recorded it were fools. Experience has taught me to be rather less arrogant.”
