# Fire-Birds (Pozhar-Ptitsy) *"They do not eat. They do not sleep. They only shriek."* --- Nature: The vanguard of something far worse. Fire-Bird Drones are the scouts—dog-sized, chitinous, blind. Their segmented black carapace gleams with an oily sheen. They have no eyes, no mouth, no face—only a vibrating membrane on their underside that emits a piercing shriek. That shriek cracks gas mask lenses. It vibrates in the teeth. It is the last sound many hear. Among the swarm, variations emerge. Shriekers are stationary, locking onto a position with a sustained scream that drains filter efficiency and shatters focus. Their exposed underside membrane is their only vulnerability. Crawlers move along walls and ceilings, flanking from above while the main swarm draws attention. They lose their grip when hit, crashing to the ground where they are briefly vulnerable before climbing again. They flood the tunnels in swarms, scouting for the larger Fire-Birds that follow. Those larger creatures are never seen. Only felt—as a subsonic thrum in the chest, a pressure change in the stale tunnel air, a sound too low to hear but impossible to ignore. The drones do not retreat. They do not negotiate. They do not stop
