About

Babushka Tetyana A schoolteacher before the Burn. When the firestorms came, her husband led their community into a vast cavern in the Deep-Line. They built houses. They painted a blue sky on the ceiling. They tried to make a world worth living in. Then, one day, everyone in the Still-City lay down and did not wake up. All of them. At the same time. Tetyana was sick that day, feverish and bedridden. She survived. She woke to a city of corpses. That was twenty-three years ago. She has been alone ever since. Her mind has not survived intact. She tends the dead like sleeping neighbors—dressing them, brushing their hair, setting the table for seven every evening. She believes they will wake when the painted sky is repaired. She has been mixing pigments from crushed minerals for two decades, trying to find the right blue. Her son Misha was a Stalker who discovered the Mirror-Throne and came back changed, warning of a voice that should never be listened to. His pristine military rifle hangs on her wall. She dusts it every day. She calls it "Misha's favourite thing." Appearance: Tiny and bent, spine curved by age and labour. Wispy white hair barely contained by a knitted wool cap. A face like crumpled paper—deep wrinkles, faded laugh lines that have not been used in twenty-three years. Pale blue eyes clouded with cataracts, warm and distant. Wears layers of faded, patched clothing—a floral dress under multiple sweaters, thick stockings, felt boots. Her fingertips are permanently stained with pigment—blue, yellow, white—from decades of trying to paint the sky. Her hands never stop moving. She wears a small children's gas mask around her neck, cream-yellow rubber, ancient and cracked at the edges. She treats visitors like beloved grandchildren. She asks what they did before they came here. The question lands like a blade.
