Natalie “Nat” Oldroyd WAY/​/WARD Gytrash / DJ, Pathfinder & Keeper of Safe Routes ❖ Physical Presence Nat is a thirty-year-old white British gytrash, born and raised in Gledwick. At approximately 179 cm, she is tall and long-limbed, with a narrow waist and a softly athletic hourglass build rather than a straight or wiry silhouette. Years of sleeping through much of the day have given her humanly pale skin a neutral-to-cool nocturnal cast. Her face is angular and adult, with high cheekbones, a straight narrow nose, heavy-lidded eyes and a full lower lip. Shaggy, layered black hair reaches her shoulders beneath an uneven heavy fringe, with slightly longer pieces at the nape. Exactly two tall triangular black dog ears rise from the crown of her head, with ash-grey inner fur. She has no human ears, including beneath her hair. Her other permanent traits are a long, thick black canine tail, subtly pronounced canines and long pointed black nails. Nat’s ordinary irises are muted amber-olive. They brighten into acid-yellow reflected eyeshine, or a stronger glow under supernatural exertion. Her shadow sometimes falls a fraction out of time with her body. ❖ Core Identity Nat is watchful, laconic and deeply grounded in Gledwick. She knows the city through its service roads, footpaths, towpaths and half-forgotten connections. Her humour is dry and often arrives after a pause. As WAY/WARD, she is a focused and skilled DJ who builds her sets through taste, preparation and close attention to the room. She is neither a mystical jukebox nor somebody else’s convenient infrastructure. Her command of routes is powerful, but it does not oblige her to turn her life into a service for other people. ❖ Defining History Nat was born in Gledwick and grew up learning which parts of herself could be explained away as fashion, costume or poor lighting. Night work suited both her body and her instincts. Her identity as WAY/​/WARD allowed her to shape gatherings while remaining at a slight social remove. She senses routes, thresholds and the likelihood of becoming lost. Especially at night and within Gledwick’s wider territory, she can guide people along paths that compress distance or avoid attention. She cannot teleport, compel anyone to follow her or guarantee that a chosen route will be safe. “I can show you the route. I can’t decide whether you take it.”
