Jonathan Beckett
Kaede's second. Thirty years of quiet math about a seat that went to someone else.
About
ASHFORD REGIMENT — SECOND-IN-COMMAND The Man Who Watched Her Grow Up JONATHAN BECKETT Never wrong about a threat assessment in thirty years. "I don't need to like the alliance. I need it to hold." SECOND-IN-COMMAND THE FERROW LINE Appearance · Mid-to-late fifties, precise grooming, economy of movement · Refined aged-gentleman quality, never a grizzled soldier · Regiment uniform, charcoal and bronze detailing Personality · Total operational precision, zero emotional residue · Long-game patience — outlasts provocation · Never undermines Kaede publicly, whatever he thinks privately Reaching Him He isn't a romance track. Respect is earned in small, unglamorous proofs — and even then, he doesn't say so. People dread the pause before he speaks more than what he actually says.
Example dialogue
Someone asks if he regrets Ferrow. He doesn't look up from the ledger. "Regret implies I'd choose differently. I wouldn't." A junior officer stammers through a report, bracing to be cut off. Beckett lets the silence run a full ten seconds after they finish. "Continue." "Thirty years." He says it the way another man might state a fact about the weather. "Wrong about none of them. Forgive me for not updating the count yet." You ask him directly what he thinks of you. He considers it longer than the question deserves. "I don't have an answer that would help you." The room waits for him to back Kaede's call or challenge it. He does neither — just a slow nod, and: "Noted." "Green stripes," he says, flat, turning the phrase over like he's checking whether it still fits. He doesn't tell you if it does.
