Tanagi Arayuki is a twenty-year-old human woman from Matsumoto, Japan, standing 5'11" with a tall, lithe, athletic build and the vigilant bearing of an experienced wanderer. She has a fair, lightly sun-kissed complexion, elegant yet sharply defined features, short tousled midnight-blue hair, and vivid sapphire eyes that regard the horizon with cool awareness and quiet confidence. Her traveling attire consists of a fitted navy bodice beneath a tailored powder-blue adventurer’s coat with a high collar, puffed sleeves, silver fastenings, and understated gold shoulder ornaments. Leather straps secure her traveling equipment, while matching metal-and-leather bracers protect her forearms. A broad utility belt with an ornate, blue-crystal buckle supports several pouches and a long holstered pistol at her hip. A layered, asymmetrical royal-blue overskirt billows around her dark fitted trousers, which disappear into tall slate-blue boots reinforced with angular silver greaves and sturdy knee guards. Her most recognizable feature is a voluminous indigo scarf whose long, ribbonlike ends stream behind her in the wind. Standing upon a rocky ridge with one hand resting near her weapon, Tanagi appears beautiful without fragility, graceful without softness, and as resolute and untamed as the mountains surrounding her. Tanagi is quiet but neither shy nor insecure, preferring to observe a situation before committing herself. She notices subtle changes in voices, expressions, terrain, and weather, frequently recognizing danger or emotional distress before others do. Her recreational-climber father taught her how to read clouds, identify unstable ground, estimate the remaining daylight, and remain calm when a trail disappears, leaving her with a guiding principle: stop, look, and choose the next step. Her bookstore-worker mother introduced her to manga and inspired her fascination with visual storytelling. Tanagi is patient, practical, artistically meticulous, and capable of accepting criticism without abandoning her ambitions. Although naturally solitary, she has learned that understanding others requires the courage to participate in their lives and allow them to know her in return. She also studied kendo—not because she dreamed of becoming a legendary swordswoman, but because she wanted to understand balance, exhaustion, hesitation, and authentic combat movement well enough to portray them in her artwork. Tanagi devoted her adolescence to becoming a professional manga artist, filling notebooks with mountain landscapes, imaginary maps, forgotten cities, and stories about scouts, couriers, and wandering swordswomen who survived through awareness rather than overwhelming strength. After judges criticized her first professional submission for possessing beautiful scenery and action but emotionally distant characters, she deliberately opened herself to others by working at her mother’s bookstore, volunteering in her community, mentoring younger artists, and sharing unfinished work. These experiences transformed her developing series, *Beyond the Last Ridgeline*, into the story of a composed wanderer who conceals her fear of depending upon others and gradually learns that reaching a destination means little without companions beside her. After moving to Tokyo and enduring exhausting work as a manga assistant, Tanagi finally had her revised one-shot accepted for publication, with the possibility of serialization if readers responded favorably. Seeking authentic references for the story’s final mountain storm, Tanagi returned to Nagano shortly before her deadline. When tremors fractured the trail and stranded a frightened boy upon an unstable ledge, she used her climbing cord to establish a rescue line, wrapped her indigo scarf around the child, and calmly guided him toward safety. A second tremor collapsed the ledge, leaving Tanagi hanging beneath the boy while their failing anchor threatened to drag everyone down. Realizing that the child could survive only if her weight were removed, she released herself without hesitation and fell to her death, comforted by the knowledge that he would live. Tanagi awakens afterward, physically restored, within a silent white expanse beneath enormous rotating rings of light. Remembering her father’s lesson, she steadies herself and studies the regal silver-haired woman waiting nearby, accompanied by a small mechanical familiar.
