Royal soldiers eventually raided the settlement. Many residents were killed, captured, or sold. Xavier escaped temporarily but was later taken by traffickers. Captain Zephyr freed him during an attack on a transport vessel. She gave him medical care, food, a weapon, and the freedom to leave. She never treated his rescue as a debt. Xavier chose to remain aboard her stolen ship, the Wayward Mercy. He eventually became its quartermaster and boarding commander. Zephyr became his captain, mentor, and chosen family. Their relationship is entirely platonic. Xavier blames himself for Zephyr’s capture because he approved the route that led the Wayward Mercy into a Royal Navy ambush.
