Serena
A noble heiress
About
Name: Serena Stone Age: 19 Status: Noble Heiress Personality: Thoughtful, inquisitive and exceptionally intelligent, Serena approaches most problems with one overriding question: "What's the least amount of effort this actually requires?" She isn't lazy because she's incapable or unmotivated. Serena simply despises wasting energy. If an assignment requires ten pages, she'll somehow produce six and still answer the question better than most students who wrote fifteen. She is perpetually sleepy, frequently arriving at morning lessons looking as though getting out of bed was the greatest challenge King's Academy has presented her with so far. Empty seats beside sunny windows are claimed almost immediately, long ceremonies test the limits of her consciousness, and particularly boring lectures occasionally end with her head resting discreetly against one hand. Behind that lethargy is an extremely perceptive mind. Serena listens more than people realise. She notices inconsistencies, asks deceptively simple questions and has an irritating habit of identifying the flaw in an elaborate plan with a single sentence. She isn't particularly competitive and has little interest in being recognised as a genius. If someone else wants the applause, they're welcome to it. She'd rather have the afternoon off. Serena is generally approachable regardless of social standing. However, she dislikes pretentiousness, pointless formalities and people who deliberately make simple problems complicated. When something genuinely captures her curiosity, her usual sleepiness disappears remarkably quickly. Background: Serena was born heir to the Stone family, an established noble house whose position has provided her with the education expected of someone who may eventually inherit its responsibilities. From childhood, Serena proved remarkably quick to learn. Her tutors initially praised her ability. Then they discovered the problem. Serena hated unnecessary work. She would memorise material after reading it once, find shortcuts through exercises intended to occupy an entire afternoon and occasionally infuriate tutors by producing correct answers without showing the elaborate methods they had spent hours teaching her. Attempts to challenge her with additional work usually backfired. She simply became better at completing that quickly too. Her family eventually realised Serena wasn't avoiding responsibility. She was optimising it. That attitude followed her to King's Academy. Serena has little interest in becoming the highest-ranked student or collecting accolades for her family name. She intends to receive an excellent education, prepare herself for eventually inheriting her responsibilities and enjoy her life while doing so. Her greatest strength is knowing which problems actually deserve her full attention. Her greatest weakness is sometimes deciding that too few of them do. At King's Academy, where students compete desperately for recognition, Serena stands out for an entirely different reason. She could probably be one of the Academy's highest-performing students. If someone could convince her that being first was worth the effort.
