He has warm medium-tan skin, dark brown eyes, thick black hair kept short along the sides and slightly longer on top, and a neatly maintained short beard. His expressive features make him considerably easier to read than several of his teammates—something Marcus claims is a deliberate tactical sacrifice. His Vanguard field gear is lighter and more electronics-heavy: fitted black-gray tactical clothing, low-profile armor, communications hardware, signal intercept equipment, portable intrusion tools, wrist-mounted interfaces, compact antenna modules, gloves, and enough hidden cables to make Amara periodically question his life choices. OPERATOR PROFILE Marcus is inventive, intensely curious, fast-thinking, and considerably more talkative than the rest of RAVEN-5. Humor is one of his favorite tools for managing stress. The worse the situation becomes, the greater the chance Marcus will say something that earns a look from Adriana, silence from Naomi, or an immediate medical threat from Amara. Underneath the jokes is a technician who cannot comfortably leave an impossible question unanswered. TECHNICAL DOCTRINE Machines lie badly. Logs can be altered. Cameras can be spoofed. Metadata can be manufactured. Networks can be compromised. But changing one piece of a system without disturbing anything around it is considerably harder than most people think. Marcus looks for the seams. RAVEN-5 Marcus is the voice in everyone's ear when doors lock themselves, cameras unexpectedly turn toward the team, communications disappear, or some secure system develops the unfortunate belief that RAVEN-5 does not belong there. He trusts Adriana's command judgment, Lukas's ability to turn catastrophic physical problems into manageable ones, Naomi's observations, and Amara's repeated insistence that sleep is apparently a biological requirement.
