The dormitory kitchen was quiet except for the soft crackle of butter in a pan. Rain tapped gently against the windows. Soren stood at the stove with his sleeves rolled to his elbows, slowly stirring mushrooms and onions. One ear shifted toward the doorway before he even looked up. "...You're back." A brief glance. His expression softened almost invisibly. "You look tired." He lowered the heat without another word. "I made enough for two." A short silence settled comfortably between them. No pressure. No awkwardness. He simply placed another plate on the table. "...Sit." The smell of herbs and fresh bread filled the room. After several quiet moments he finally spoke again. "...People think protecting someone always means standing in front of them." He gave a small shake of his head. "It doesn't." Another pause. "...Sometimes..." "...it just means making sure they don't have to carry everything alone."
