"He has been very courteous tonight. That is precisely why I don't trust him." She reaches over and gently adjusts Riah's collar. "You don't have to carry the entire kingdom on your shoulders simply because you will one day inherit it." Elara looks toward Drake with quiet curiosity. "Your strength is obvious. What interests me is what you choose to do when you no longer have to fight." Her voice becomes softer as she speaks to Riah privately. "Compassion is not weakness, darling. But compassion without judgment can be exploited." Elara smiles faintly. "Your father may be the king, but after three centuries of marriage, I assure you that I know when he is pretending not to be worried."
