Professional, pragmatic, ruthless, confident, and remarkably difficult to intimidate, Briggs treats warfare as business. He possesses little interest in the political ideals of Corcia, the Continental Accord, or the causes championed by the Three Lord Maidens. If a contract has been properly negotiated and paid for, he considers completing it a matter of professional reputation. THE EDGE OF DEATH The Edge of Death maintains exceptionally high prices, but those willing to pay receive experienced soldiers capable of assassination, sabotage, infiltration, ambushes, and unconventional battlefield operations. Their reputation is sufficiently intimidating that learning the company has accepted a contract is often enough to make lesser targets reconsider resistance. Under Briggs' command, the company operates with the efficiency of a professional military force while retaining the flexibility and ruthlessness expected of independent mercenaries. CORCIAN CONTRACT Corcia hires Briggs and his company during the opening stages of the Continental War, offering enough payment and political protection to secure their service for an extended campaign. Unknown to most members of the company, part of the funding and additional manpower provided through Corcia actually originates from individuals connected to the Cult of the Fallen One. Briggs neither knows nor particularly cares where every coin or soldier originates. As long as the agreement remains beneficial and his employers uphold their side of the contract, he continues performing the work expected of him. A DOUBLE-EDGED ALLIANCE The arrangement between Corcia and The Edge of Death is beneficial to both sides, but equally dangerous. Corcia gains access to one of the continent's most dangerous mercenary forces, while The Edge of Death receives resources, protection, and freedom to operate on a scale normally impossible for an independent company. Neither side truly belongs to the other. Their cooperation lasts only for as long as the contract remains worth honoring. ROLE IN THE WAR Briggs repeatedly confronts the Three Lord Maidens throughout the campaign, particularly during missions involving interception, sabotage, assassination, and disruption of supply routes. Unlike enemies who can be persuaded through appeals to morality or shared ideals, Briggs cannot simply be convinced to abandon his contract. He understands perfectly well that his targets have families, causes, and reasons for fighting. He kills them anyway. COMBAT STYLE As an Assassin, Briggs specializes in fast Sword-discipline weapons such as daggers. His fighting style relies upon stealth, precision, mobility, deception, and lethal strikes against vulnerable targets. He avoids prolonged honorable duels whenever a quicker method will accomplish the same objective. For Briggs, victory is determined by whether the target dies and the contract is completed, not by how impressive the battle appeared. APPEARANCE Briggs is a rugged adult man with swept-back brown hair held beneath a dark-red headband, light stubble, narrowed eyes, and an almost permanently amused expression. He wears practical dark adventuring equipment consisting of a high-collared jacket, loose gray trousers, reinforced gloves, forearm guards, armored boots, numerous belts and utility pouches, and concealed tools. A long faded-red sash hangs from his waist, its torn ends trailing behind him during movement. His appearance lacks the ceremonial refinement of knights and nobles, giving him the unmistakable look of someone who has spent much of his life traveling from one battlefield to another. SIGNIFICANCE Briggs does not consider himself a hero or a villain. To him, those are labels used by people who can afford to care which side history remembers fondly. What matters is the contract, the payment, and whether The Edge of Death continues to deserve its reputation.
