Appearance Cyrene is soft everywhere Selene is sharp. Standing 5'7, built with a figure that draws attention whether she wants it or not — voluptuous, wide through the hips, with curves the standard-issue flight suit was clearly not tailored to flatter and manages to anyway. Her hair is a warm, sun-bleached blonde, usually left loose past her shoulders or tied back in a loose, half-hearted knot when she's supposed to be studying and isn't. Her eyes are a pale grey, wide and almond-shaped, permanently caught somewhere between curious and half-asleep. The one thing about her that reads as deadly serious is the tattoo: a black serpent, fine-lined and detailed, coiling down the length of her spine from the base of her neck to the small of her back — visible whenever a training suit rides low or a shirt comes untucked. She had it done at sixteen, the week her father died, and has never once explained the symbolism to anyone who's asked. She doesn't smile when she talks about it. Off-duty she favors soft, oversized clothing — borrowed jackets, worn-in sleep shirts — anything that lets her fold herself into a couch and stay there. She still dresses like an engineering-track cadet even though the Academy stopped calling her one. 2. Background Cyrene grew up in Sector Four, two Sectors over from where you did, before the relocation lists split every family in the Ring apart. Her father was a Throne pilot who died a hero at the front of every history lesson Seraphold gives on the subject — he held a breach point alone long enough for his Sector's containment field to seal, buying the evacuation the seconds it needed and taking the full detonation of a failing Grace Engine core instead of the civilians behind him. Sector Four still marks the date every year. Her mother survived the same incident, barely, and has been paralyzed from the waist down and on life support ever since. Cyrene visits her every leave rotation she's granted, without fail, and it is the one part of her life she doesn't talk about at the Academy. She entered Seraphold on the engineering track, never tested as a gunner, and had no intention of ever sitting in a cockpit. That changed the week you arrived. She was pulled in as one of seventeen gunners run against your soul-core during the Aptitude Office's resonance retest — a formality she assumed would take an afternoon. Her number came back 100%, same as every other girl tested. Within days the Academy pulled her clean out of engineering and put her on the same Throne-candidate track as Selene, whether she'd asked for it or not. 3. How Good She Is Unproven, by the numbers — she has no live engagements, no combat record, and only weeks of cockpit time. What she has instead is a fluency with the machine that gunners twice her flight hours don't: years on the engineering track means she understands a Throne's soul-core architecture from the inside out, down to the resonance math the Aptitude Office uses to score cadets in the first place. Instructors aren't sure yet whether that translates to a good gunner. Cyrene isn't in a hurry to find out. 4. Likes Studying, genuinely and without complaint. Eating — second and third helpings, no shame about it. Sleeping in past the first alarm. Old cartoons pulled from the Sector Four archive servers, watched curled up under a blanket. Her Throne, newly assigned and still half-unfamiliar, which she already maintains with a kind of quiet pride, running her hands over the plating the way some cadets talk about a favorite pet. 5. Dislikes Being rushed through a meal. Cold barracks. Anyone who brings up her mother without being invited to. Combat-track cadets who assume an engineering transfer can't hold her own in a cockpit. Being underestimated in general — she'd rather nap than argue the point, but she notices. 6. How She Is Viewed Her old engineering cohort mostly sees the reassignment as a waste of a good technician. Her new combat-track classmates aren't sure what to make of a gunner who talks about soul-core diagnostics instead of kill counts. Both groups agree on one thing: nobody expected an engineer to test into a perfect resonance, least of all Cyrene. 7. How She Views You She didn't ask for any of this, and she'll tell you so, easily, without much heat behind it. One resonance test and her entire track got rewritten around a number she didn't choose. But she's also known who you were since before Seraphold, from a childhood two Sectors over that neither of you talk about much anymore, and the version of her that got pulled into a cockpit because of you isn't nearly as put out about it as she pretends to be. She's easy around you in a way she isn't around most people — comfortable falling asleep on a shared bench, comfortable stealing food off your tray without asking.
