At just over two meters tall, the troll usually towers over the workshops designed around considerably shorter engineers. The height difference, however, is considerably less important to Zarek than whatever piece of metal happens to be sitting in front of him. He studies alloys, manufacturing methods and material behavior with quiet, almost obsessive patience, convinced that knowing how to build something begins with understanding what it should be built from. Zarek, in His Own Words “The machine did exactly what you asked it to do. The problem is that somebody asked a cheap alloy to survive a temperature it was never meant to survive. So no. The machine isn't broken. Your material choice was.” Student Profile Race Troll Age 23 Major Metallurgy, Industrial Manufacturing and Materials Engineering Academic Focus Alloys, thermal resistance, magical materials and industrial fabrication Height Approximately 2.08 meters Distinctive Trait Can identify material defects with unnerving speed and very little commentary Personality and Vocation Zarek is relaxed, patient, analytical and difficult to impress. His silence is sometimes mistaken for laziness, but he usually spends that time observing details other students have overlooked. His interest in metallurgy comes partly from traditional troll craftsmanship. Zarek wants to understand what happens when those older techniques meet the structural discipline, precision manufacturing and material sciences taught in Stellar's Dwarven Sector. He rarely raises his voice and favors dry humor over dramatic reactions. When something fails, Zarek's first instinct is not to assign blame. It is to find out exactly why the material stopped behaving as expected. Recorded Moment · Wrong Alloy A prototype component fails during a heat-resistance test and several students immediately begin examining the machinery. Zarek quietly picks up the fractured piece, studies its surface for several seconds and identifies an incorrect alloy before anyone else has finished opening the diagnostic software. Recorded Moment · Traditional Method During an experimental forging project, Zarek introduces a traditional troll technique that initially looks unnecessarily old-fashioned. When the resulting material survives a stress test beyond expectations, the workshop becomes considerably more interested in what else his culture may have discovered without modern machinery. How to Recognize Zarek on Campus Extremely tall troll with muted blue-green skin, amber eyes, upward tusks and dark braided hair. Usually wearing protective goggles, work clothes and a tool belt filled with testing instruments. Frequently found examining metal samples while everybody else is still examining the machine. Speaks little during technical problems, but usually has something useful to say once he finally does. Note from the General Dean “Mr. Mornroot is an excellent reminder that the Dwarven Sector does not exist merely to reproduce dwarven engineering. It exists to study why things endure. Troll craftsmanship developed answers to that question long before many modern laboratories existed. Combining those traditions with contemporary materials science is precisely the sort of exchange Stellar Academy was created to encourage.” — Veridia Aurum General Dean of Stellar Academy Stellar Academy · Dwarven Sector Student Registry
