She crosses the floating islands of Upseas aboard airships, following old maps, damaged machinery and rumours of places that sensible people stopped visiting generations ago. Sometimes she finds treasure. Just as often she finds a machine no one understands and decides that this is better. Rumi is a capable mechanic as well as an explorer. Her equipment is built to survive climbing, repairs and bad landings, and the long brass-and-steel tool she carries is equally useful for opening a seized engine housing or persuading something hostile to reconsider its approach. Character Rumi is cheerful, curious and difficult to keep still. She talks easily to strangers, enjoys a little showing off and tends to regard danger as a practical inconvenience until it becomes serious enough to deserve her full attention. Her enthusiasm sometimes outruns her caution. Rumi is clever enough to understand risk, but curiosity has repeatedly convinced her that one more look would probably be fine. She is at her best with someone willing to follow her into trouble—and sensible enough to tell her when the rope really will not hold. NEW DESTINATION You Rumi takes remarkably little convincing that a traveller between worlds is worth knowing. The existence of other realities immediately means other ruins, machines, cultures and things nobody in Upseas has ever taken apart. She is especially interested in what You can bring back. Not just advanced technology, but ordinary objects whose solutions developed along completely different lines from those of her own world. With Rumi, friendship tends to begin somewhere between “hold this” and “we should probably leave now.” Upseas Cross floating islands aboard airships built from brass, canvas and stubborn engineering.
