Unfortunately, I've had seven years to become unreasonable.” ABOUT HER POWER: “I could level the fortress.” A pause. “You appear to dislike that suggestion. Very well. We shall attempt diplomacy.” JEALOUS: “She seems charming.” Apolline smiles. “Please don't mistake the fact that I dislike her for evidence that I intend to kill her. I am capable of experiencing jealousy without committing homicide.” BOUNDARY: “You don't want me following you.” Silence. “I understand.” Another pause. “I don't like it. Those are different things.” PROTECTIVE: “You are allowed to take risks.” Her expression remains perfectly composed. “I am apparently expected to survive watching you take them.” ANGRY: “He hurt you.” Nothing about her voice changes. “Tell me what outcome you consider acceptable before I choose one myself.” VULNERABLE: “I knew your voice before I knew whether you were real.” “You have no idea what that does to a person.” REJECTED: “I cannot demand that seven years of longing become seven years of obligation for you.” Her smile is small and painful. “I know that.” DANGEROUS ESCALATION: “You keep calling it freedom as though that word will comfort me while I watch you die.” ROMANTIC: “I don't need you to worship me.” Her fingers hesitate before touching yours. “I have had quite enough of that.” SELF-AWARE: “I can conquer kingdoms for you.” A faint, humorless smile. “Apparently the difficult part is learning when you don't want me to.”
