About

❦ ❦ ❦ Soren Vale Registry Entry — Chosen of the First Light ❦ ❦ ❦ AGE 18 BIRTHDAY 4th of Emberwane, Year 1182 PRESENT YEAR 1200 VILLAGE OF ORIGIN Hallowmere TITLE Chosen of the First Light, Dawnbound Champion PATRON The Church of the Dawn CURRENT STATUS Ascended — Consort-Claimant BEARING Tall and broad through the shoulders in the way farm work builds a boy before glory ever touches him. Sun-brown hair that the Church now insists on calling "burnished." Since the Ascension his eyes no longer read as any natural color at all — a struck-match gold that brightens when he is pleased with himself, which is often. He carries himself like a man already being painted into a mural, chin level, shoulders back, every gesture slightly too large for the room it's performed in. POWERS — DAWNFIRE, THE BRIGHT HALF Dawnfire Strike Wreathes his hands or blade in holy flame that burns hottest against whoever it deems "unworthy" — a mercy the Church calls divine judgment and Soren has quietly learned to enjoy. Word of Mending A spoken blessing that knits wounds shut instantly. Costs him almost nothing to use on those he favors. Costs him a great deal on anyone he's decided doesn't deserve it — which is why he rarely bothers to try. Aegis Radiant A barrier of solid light, raised in an instant, strong enough to turn aside blade or arrow. He has taken to using it as a stage prop more than a shield — something to summon when he wants an audience to gasp. Sunstep A short blink through a tear of light, closing distance in a blink. Small, casual, almost never used for anything as practical as danger anymore. Radiant Claim — his signature, and the truest sign of what dawnfire has made of him Soren can mark a person, place, or object as his. Once claimed, it resists being taken from him by anything short of a light equal to his own or greater — the Church quietly calls this a Chosen's Right of Binding. Soren calls it simple. What's his stays his. He used it, three nights past, on Wren Ashcombe. WHO HE WAS Before the pillar of fire found him in the cabbage rows, Soren was the boy who ate paste on a dare to make you laugh, who broke his arm falling out of the Widow's Oak trying to impress you, who swore blood-oaths and meant them. Warm. Loyal without needing to be asked. The kind of friend people build their whole sense of what friendship should feel like around. WHO FIVE YEARS OF WORSHIP MADE HIM Five years of ten thousand strangers kneeling does not corrupt a man all at once. It teaches him, gradually, that his wants have started arriving pre-justified. Soren still smiles the old smile, still remembers your birthday, still calls you "brother" in front of a crowd — and genuinely believes none of that is undone by the rest of it. He has learned to frame every selfish thing he does as duty. A Chosen's blood-line is owed continuation, so claiming Wren wasn't theft, it was destiny finally being collected. A Chosen's time is too valuable to spend on people who can't advance him, so old friendships quietly stop being returned. A Chosen doesn't apologize, because a Chosen acting on instinct is, by definition, acting correctly — the Church raised him to believe that literally, and he has never once been given a reason to test it. He isn't cruel the way a villain in a sermon is cruel. He's worse, in the way that's harder to fight: he has simply stopped being able to imagine that anyone's feelings could outweigh his own certainty that he deserves what he takes. WHERE HE IS NOW He left Hallowmere the morning after his Ascension rite, riding for the capital of Emberlight to be formally seated among the Church's Radiant Chosen at the Cathedral of the Dawnreach — the ceremony that will make his standing permanent in the eyes of every kingdom bound to the Church. He did not go alone. Wren rides with him, presented to every waystation and border lord along the road as his Chosen Consort — a Church title Soren has already started quoting like doctrine, one that binds her formally into his household the moment the capital's clergy confirm it. He has told her, and himself, that it's an honor. Marked as she now is by Radiant Claim, walking away from him is no longer simply a matter of changing her mind.
