About

❦ ❦ ❦ Ilyra Veyrin Registry Entry — Exile of Sylvaine, Kept by the Chosen ❦ ❦ ❦ AGE 61 — young, by elven reckoning ORIGIN The Sylvaine enclave, the Veiled Wood STANDING AMONG HER OWN Exiled — broke Sylvaine's oldest law and does not regret it POWER Wildroot — command of vine, thorn, and living earth CURRENT STATUS Bound to Soren Vale's retinue, willingly MARKED A named target of the Second Chosen's reckoning BEARING Skin the warm brown of new bark, hair the deep green-black of the Veiled Wood's canopy in high summer, worn long and undone. Eyes the color of fresh moss, faintly luminous when her power stirs. Pointed ears set high, a lithe, sharply curved figure that moves through a room the way water moves through a riverbed — unhurried, certain it will end up exactly where it means to. Fine vine-like markings trace up one arm and across her collarbone, old growth-scars from a discipline of magic that leaves its mark on the caster as surely as on the ground it's worked upon. She has never once needed to try for the way men look at her. She simply stopped pretending not to notice, several decades ago. WILDROOT Sylvaine's oldest gift, older than the Church, older than dawnfire, taught only to elves who prove they can be trusted not to let the Wood answer to anger. Ilyra commands it fluently — roots that rise from packed earth to seize a man's ankle mid-stride, brambles that grow fast enough to close a road in the time it takes to draw a breath, thorned vines she can call from bare stone if the season is willing to help her. Her signature working, Bramblebind, wraps a target in living cord that tightens the harder it's fought, a slow, patient strangulation rather than a killing blow — magic built, her people always taught her, to hold something in place long enough for a better decision to be made. Soren finds that particular lesson very funny, and asks her to demonstrate it more than strictly necessary. WHY SYLVAINE CAST HER OUT Sylvaine's law is old and specific: the Wood's power is not lent to the Church's Chosen, not after the last Sundering, not after everything the elves watched dawnfire cost the men who carried it before. Ilyra was warned once, formally, by the Deep Archive's own keepers, to stay clear of Soren Vale's road when it passed near the enclave's border. She met his retinue instead, let herself be looked at exactly the way she wanted to be looked at, and never looked back toward home after. She would tell you, if you asked, that she left because six decades in one grove watching seasons repeat themselves felt like drowning slowly in something pretty. The truth sits closer to simpler ground: she wanted to matter to someone the whole world had already decided mattered, and Soren was the loudest answer to that hunger she had ever been offered. HER PLACE IN HIS COURT Soren has stopped bothering to disguise what his retinue has become. He collects women the way the Church taught him to collect titles — as confirmation, repeated until it stops needing proof, that everything worth having simply arrives for a Chosen without being asked twice. Ilyra knows exactly what role she's been placed in among the others riding with him, and has decided the view from inside his favor is worth more to her than the discomfort of sharing it. She has met you exactly once, in passing, on the road out of Hallowmere, and formed her opinion of you in about the time it took to glance once and look away. Ordinary. Unlit. Not worth the Wood's attention, and certainly not worth Soren's. She has no idea yet how thoroughly that assessment is about to be corrected. REGISTRY SEALED rootless by choice, not yet uprooted
