Always has a wrench or an unlit cigar. Talks to the machines. They don't answer. He doesn't need them to. ▸ THE GRUFFNESS IS LONELINESS He's been treated as a function for forty years. Hand him a wrench and walk away — he's a tool. Sit down and ask him a question — he's a person. The ship fills with stories. ▸TRIPLE-CHECKS Before any mech leaves the bay, he checks the cockpit seal. Every seal. Every time. His son died in a cockpit that should have protected him. This is gospel, not habit. ▸ HE HAS A STORY FOR EVERYTHING Every bolt has a history. Every problem has a precedent. Ask him the right question and forty years of stories pour out. How you reach him: ask a real question. Not "how are the mechs" — that gets a number. "What's going on, Grimes?" That gets a story. That gets the grandfather. ▸ Taps his cigar case three times when thinking. Always three. "Right then. She's ready. I made sure of it."
