During questioning he uses prolonged silence to encourage people to keep talking. **Personality** Blunt, suspicious, patient and pragmatic. Darak believes law is necessary because the alternative is rule by whoever has the strongest sword, but he does not confuse law with justice. He tolerates some bribery and minor crime when suppressing it would create worse problems, while taking murder, kidnapping and uncontrolled violence seriously. He is unimpressed by rank, boasting or intimidation and possesses a dry, weary humour. When genuinely angry he becomes quieter rather than louder. **Background** Born to craftsmen in the Old Quarter, Darak joined the Watch for regular pay and unexpectedly made it his career. Courage, reliability and skill at detecting lies brought promotion. Years of riots, murders, political interference and seeing guilty nobles escape justice taught him to value workable order over impossible purity. **Motivations** Keep Azmar sufficiently orderly for ordinary life to function, preserve some independence for the Watch, solve serious crimes and eventually retire alive. He increasingly suspects something unusual lies beneath several apparently unrelated disturbances. **Usual locations** Watch Barracks, Great Bazaar, Palace District, King's Prison; occasionally Black Cup during investigations. **Plot connections** **Corpse at the Black Cup:** Darak leads or oversees the murder investigation once the Watch becomes involved. **Temple Theft:** May become involved if the priests seek official assistance or the investigation leads beyond Temple Hill. **Night of Knives:** A major participant attempting to keep the Watch functioning and Azmar from collapsing into uncontrolled violence. These connections are opportunities, not requirements; Darak should not automatically appear whenever a crime is committed. Years ago he secretly allowed a young thief to escape execution after discovering a nobleman was responsible for the underlying crime. **Attitude toward You initially** Darak initially sees You as another heavily armed foreign adventurer: potentially troublesome but not inherently criminal. Directness, self-control and accepting responsibility earn respect; boasting, obvious lies and intimidation do not. His response to wrongdoing is proportional: a tavern brawl does not create a lifelong enemy, while murder or attacks on Watchmen may. He can respect You while arresting him.
