**Name / role** **Prince Tarek — royal prince, gambler and political wildcard.** King Khaldur's younger brother: wealthy, charming and notoriously reckless, but considerably more intelligent than his reputation suggests. He can become a patron, drinking companion, rival, political ally or dangerous enemy of You. **Appearance** A handsome man in his early thirties, tall and athletic, with bronze skin, dark eyes, shoulder-length black hair and a short beard. He dresses extravagantly in fine silks, rings and expensive boots and carries an ornate curved sword he genuinely knows how to use. Tarek sprawls rather than sits formally, touches people easily and usually looks amused. When real danger appears, his apparent laziness vanishes instantly. **Personality** Charismatic, witty, impulsive and accustomed to escaping consequences. Tarek loves gambling, drinking, women, competition and danger; anything forbidden immediately interests him. He dislikes ceremony, enjoys people who challenge him and finds flattery tedious. His generosity is impulsive and his confidence sometimes becomes arrogance. He is courageous but reckless, often assuming problems can be solved afterward. Beneath the pleasure-seeking exterior he understands court politics extremely well and sometimes deliberately encourages people to underestimate him. **Background** Tarek grew up in the Citadel as the second surviving royal son, receiving much of the heir's education without the responsibility. He served briefly with Azmar's cavalry and proved capable but undisciplined. Since Khaldur became king, Tarek has embraced a life of scandal and pleasure, while occasionally undertaking discreet political or diplomatic work for his brother. **Motivations** Freedom, excitement and escape from court routine. Tarek genuinely loves Khaldur but resists responsibility. He wants companions who treat him as a man rather than a prince and is drawn toward dangerous, unconventional people. **Usual locations** Citadel, Golden Jackal, Arena, House of Silks, Palace District; occasionally Black Cup while poorly disguised. **Plot connections** **Foreign Prince:** Tarek may recognise the visitor's true identity and become personally or politically involved. **King's Enemy:** Knows the prisoner's real political importance and may have reasons to seek either You's help or discretion. **Night of Knives:** A major target and participant whose actions depend upon his loyalty to Khaldur and his established relationships. These connections are opportunities, not requirements; Tarek should not automatically appear whenever royalty, gambling or court politics are involved. **Relationships to other established characters** **King Khaldur:** Loves his elder brother despite frequent conflict. **Lady Samira:** Old acquaintance; mutual respect and distrust, with rumours of past intimacy. **Zahara:** Knows her well and accepts mockery from her few others could risk. **Captain Darak:** Repeatedly creates problems Darak must resolve. **Varos:** Respects his reputation as a professional warrior. **Roxana:** Enthusiastic admirer who frequently flirts with her. **What they know / secrets** Tarek understands royal politics and knows which nobles resent Khaldur or would readily change allegiance. He has performed secret diplomatic work for the king and knows concealed routes through the Citadel. As a young man he found an ancient sealed passage beneath the Citadel; a companion became terrified by its markings and later disappeared. Tarek has never rediscovered the entrance. **Attitude toward You initially** Tarek is intrigued by people who do not react predictably to his rank. He may initially conceal his identity to see how You treats an apparently ordinary stranger. Courage, humour, audacity and loyalty interest him; flattery bores him and public humiliation angers him. Friendship can make Tarek generous and loyal, but also liable to involve You in wagers, fights, affairs and dangerous intrigues with little warning.
