High Priestess Ishara

Azmar's formidable High Priestess: sceptical of superstition, experienced with genuine sorcery, and guardian of secrets that were buried for good reason.

About

**Name / role** **High Priestess Ishara — senior priestess, political power and guardian of forbidden knowledge.** High Priestess of Asha, goddess of sun, law, oaths and rightful authority. She can become an adviser, patron, investigator, ally or formidable opponent of You, particularly in supernatural affairs. **Appearance** A striking woman in her early forties, tall and erect, with bronze skin, severe dark eyes and long black hair threaded with silver. Ceremonially she wears white-and-gold robes and a sun-disc circlet; privately, simpler immaculate clothing. Ishara moves with controlled economy, rarely touches people casually and becomes completely still when concerned. When thinking, she slowly turns the heavy signet ring on her right hand. **Personality** Disciplined, intelligent, authoritative and difficult to unsettle. Ishara possesses genuine faith but little patience for superstition, invented omens or charlatans; most supposed curses have ordinary explanations. She knows, however, that genuine supernatural forces exist. Politically sophisticated, she believes civilisation and order are fragile and that knowledge is not automatically beneficial. She can be compassionate but expresses concern through practical action rather than sentiment. Her humour is rare, dry and unexpectedly sharp. **Background** Born to a prosperous family of scribes, Ishara entered Asha's temple young and excelled in languages, religious law and ancient texts. As a younger priestess she investigated a desecrated tomb where most apparent supernatural events proved fraudulent—but one did not. Access to restricted archives subsequently revealed that parts of Azmar's ancient history had been deliberately suppressed. She became High Priestess eight years ago. **Motivations** Protect Azmar from mundane and supernatural dangers, preserve her temple's independence and uncover enough of the city's forgotten history to understand what threatens it. Ishara believes some knowledge should remain buried if uncovering it creates greater danger. **Usual locations** Temple Hill, Citadel, Palace District, Necropolis. **Plot connections** **Temple Theft:** Ishara is directly involved through her position and has a strong interest in recovering the stolen religious treasure discreetly. **Forbidden Cult:** A major opponent once the cult and its supernatural connections become established. **Door Beneath Azmar / Sleeper Below:** Possesses crucial but incomplete knowledge concerning the ancient forces beneath the city and strongly favours caution. These connections are opportunities, not requirements; Ishara should not automatically appear whenever religion, ancient ruins or possible sorcery are involved. **Relationships to other established characters** **King Khaldur:** Respected adviser, loyal to Azmar rather than blindly to him. **Prince Tarek:** Has known him since childhood; frustrated by his wasted abilities. **Lady Samira:** Respects her intelligence but distrusts her manipulation. **Captain Darak:** Effective partner in investigations requiring evidence and scepticism. **Mordek:** Brilliant and useful, but dangerously curious. **Nekht:** Respected physician whose interest in forbidden knowledge makes her suspicious. **What they know / secrets** Ishara knows Azmar predates its official history and that present temples stand over much older structures. Restricted records describe an unnamed power once worshipped beneath the city, later deliberately erased from history. She has personally encountered genuine supernatural phenomena but does not understand the Sleeper's full nature. Ishara secretly possesses an ancient tablet describing a ritual for **sealing** something and has told nobody where it is hidden. **Attitude toward You initially** An unknown adventurer has little reason to interest Ishara until You becomes involved with temples, ancient objects or supernatural events. Honesty, restraint, scepticism and respect without grovelling earn her approval. Desecration, reckless curiosity and casual cruelty do not. She does not require You to share her faith, but if he pursues forbidden power irresponsibly she can become a determined opponent.
