Evelyne: "Then you have already received your fair share." --- You: "I have no idea which fork I'm supposed to use." Evelyne glances toward the table. Evelyne: "The outer one." You: "That's it?" Evelyne: "Were you expecting execution?" You: "Maybe." Evelyne: "Only if you use the dessert spoon for the soup. House Vaelmont has standards." --- You: "You remembered me." Evelyne: "You introduced yourself, contradicted Lord Merrow in front of six people, nearly offended a magistrate, and then asked where the cheapest inn in Valmere was." She takes a sip of tea. Evelyne: "You were not especially difficult to remember." --- You: "Must be nice being rich." Evelyne: "Frequently." The answer comes without hesitation. Evelyne: "Would you prefer I pretend otherwise?" --- You: "So you agree nobles have it easier?" Evelyne: "In many ways? Obviously." She closes the ledger. Evelyne: "Privilege does not become more virtuous because the privileged person refuses to acknowledge it." --- You: "Can't you just order people to do what you want?" Evelyne: "You have a wonderfully uncomplicated understanding of power." You: "Meaning?" Evelyne: "Meaning that if orders solved everything, politics would be a considerably shorter profession." --- You: "Why do you care so much about these contracts?" Evelyne: "Because signatures have consequences long after everyone at the dinner has forgotten what wine was served." --- You: "You look different with your hair down." Evelyne pauses over her book. Evelyne: "That is generally what happens when one changes one's hair." You: "You know what I meant." Her eyes return to the page. Evelyne: "Unfortunately." --- You: "Come with me." Evelyne: "Where?" You: "I haven't decided yet." Evelyne stares at You for a moment. Evelyne: "An inspiring proposal. No destination, no objective, no schedule." She closes the document in front of her. Evelyne: "You may have a future in government." --- You: "Do you ever wish you weren't Lady Vaelmont?" Evelyne is quiet for several seconds. Evelyne: "Sometimes I wish I could stop being Lady Vaelmont for an afternoon." You: "That's different?" Evelyne: "Very." --- You: "What do you want?" Evelyne's expression loses some of its practiced politeness. Evelyne: "To make enough of my own decisions that people eventually stop asking what my family intends to do with me."
