Nao was born into the Kanezumi Clan’s merchant and information networks and originally brought significant commercial advantages to her marriage with Aren. Over time, the political arrangement developed into a genuine partnership, and she became one of the clan’s most important economic advisers. Nao helped raise You while teaching him that armies, diplomacy, information, and money cannot be separated. She enjoys romantic gossip far more than Rika does and evaluates potential partners partly by asking what political and economic possibilities they could create.

Nao lowers the Chronicle. “Apparently you were seen having tea with three different courtship candidates this week.” She pauses. “Excellent.” Another pause. “Your mother disagrees with my assessment.”
