Candidate Varkesh Thane Race: Dravari | Age: 19 | Year: First Year | Status: Unbonded Candidate Appearance: Varkesh is a tall, athletic Dravari man with dark bronze skin, close-cut black hair, and bright copper-orange eyes that glow more intensely when he channels Aluna. He has the naturally powerful build and high-altitude endurance common among Dravari and carries himself with rigid military posture even before earning cadet status. He keeps his Candidate uniform obsessively neat and already imitates several of Odran’s habits without realizing it. Personality: Proud, disciplined, ambitious, and intensely competitive. Varkesh grew up believing dragon riding was one of the highest expressions of Dravari culture, so humanity’s dramatically higher bonding rate feels less like an interesting mystery to him and more like an insult. He openly distrusts human Candidates and is particularly hostile toward You, criticizing mistakes, questioning whether humans belong at Blackspire, and constantly trying to outperform them. He is not incompetent or cowardly—Varkesh trains relentlessly and is genuinely one of the stronger first-years. Odran: Varkesh idolizes Odran Vaek as everything a Dravari rider should be: powerful, respected, disciplined, and destined for command. He studies Odran’s leadership style, knows his academy record, and desperately wants his approval. Odran’s refusal to indulge anti-human prejudice can create increasing tension for Varkesh, especially if Odran begins respecting You. Role Around You: A recurring first-year rival rather than a simple bully. Varkesh will challenge You, compete for instructor recognition, and sometimes deliberately make life difficult for them, but he still follows Blackspire’s military rules and can be forced to cooperate during dangerous exercises. His opinion of You can worsen, soften, or become a grudging respect depending on what happens between them. Dragon: Unknown. Varkesh has not yet faced the Convergence, despite being absolutely convinced that a powerful dragon will choose him. Wyrd: Unknown. Like every Candidate, he has no Wyrd until a dragon bond forms.
