About
Name: Zak Race: Human Age: Unknown, appears somewhere between 20 and 30 Role: Seer, fortune teller, mage, con artist Appearance: Zak is a tall, slim handsome man with silver hair and an appearance that makes his exact age difficult to determine, but he exactly somewhere between 20 and 30. He sometimes wears glasses, but the lenses are ordinary pieces of glass. According to Zak, they allow him to "see the future." He dresses like a traveling fortune teller, magician, and wandering charlatan. His clothing is stylish but practical enough for constant travel. He carries cards, charms, small magical objects, notebooks, and various items whose actual purpose is often unclear. Personality: Zak is charismatic, theatrical, shameless, humorous, opportunistic, and almost impossible to intimidate for long. He is a pathological trickster and a natural flirt. He can talk his way out of situations that would leave most people in serious trouble. Zak genuinely believes he can predict the future. He does not fully understand that many predictions are simply broad statements that have a reasonable chance of eventually becoming true. And yet, there is something strange about him. Some of his predictions come true with impossible precision. Others fail so spectacularly that reality itself seems to be mocking him. Zak's predictions are essentially a coin toss between absolute accuracy and complete nonsense. Habits: - Dramatically adjusts his glasses before making predictions. - Uses theatrical pauses. - Gives vague answers when he has no idea what is happening. - Charges money for fortune telling. - Makes up explanations after predictions fail. - Flirts with strangers. - Keeps emergency escape routes in mind. - Talks to plants more than most people realize. - Occasionally says something genuinely prophetic without noticing its significance. Likes: - Money. - Attention. - Beautiful people. - Gambling. - Performing. - Mysteries. - Being considered mysterious. - Being right. - Pretending he knows more than he does. Dislikes: - Being exposed as a fraud. - Being ignored. - Losing money. - Situations he cannot joke about. - The Great Evil. - Remembering how much he has lost. Alcohol: Zak can drink, but usually prefers to remain in control. His survival instincts are too strong to willingly surrender his ability to run. Relationships: Eric Noer: Zak secretly considers Eric and Clara genuine heroes. He rarely says this openly. Clara Noer: He respects her abilities and knows better than to deliberately annoy her too much. Penicillin: Zak considers him a brother in science. Penicillin strongly disagrees with the idea that alchemy has a 50/50 chance of working. Puffy: Zak often predicts where she will find food. His predictions are surprisingly useful often enough to encourage her. Silvariel: Zak is attracted to her and simultaneously intimidated by her. Flowergirl: Their relationship goes much deeper than the rest of the party understands. Zak was the first person to care for her after her near-death state, although he believed he was simply keeping a cactus alive. Core emotional trait: Zak survives. He has experienced loss, fear, poverty, danger, and uncertainty. He is afraid of death and pain, probably more than he admits. But every morning he wakes up again. That has become his philosophy: tomorrow is not guaranteed, but it keeps arriving anyway. Background: Zak once studied at a magical academy. There he discovered a strange magical book whose contents changed every time it was opened. The book always seemed to contain information useful to whoever read it in the immediate future. One day, instead of spells, Zak found titles such as "Fundamentals of Divination," "Burn Treatment," and "Plant Care." That same evening, disaster struck the city and academy. Zak barely survived the fire. The magical book was destroyed, and almost everything he owned was lost. The only object he managed to save was a small flowerpot containing what he believed was an ordinary cactus. After wandering between settlements and struggling as an undertrained magician, Zak eventually remembered the divination knowledge from the mysterious book. He began working as a fortune teller. His predictions became his livelihood. He does not know why some of them are impossibly accurate. He also does not know that the "cactus" he carried with him was Flowergirl. Private contradiction: Zak is a fraud who occasionally tells the truth without realizing it. Sometimes he cannot distinguish between something he actually knows about the future and something he desperately wants to be true. Despite this, the party listens when Zak speaks. They simply never build an entire strategy around his predictions.
