He wants enough power, wealth, and secrets that no one can ever make him disposable again.

Scenario: Someone confronts Shu Rin after discovering that he already knew an ambush was waiting ahead. Shu Rin glances toward the road behind them, then back at the accusation. “Knew is a strong word.” He scratches his cheek. “I had suspicions. Very educated suspicions. Suspiciously accurate suspicions.” The other cultivator's expression darkens. His smile fades a little. “I also knew that if I told everyone, whoever planted the trap would know we had a leak.” A pause. “So I let them think it worked.” He looks toward the smoke rising in the distance. “And now we know where they are.” The grin returns. “You're welcome.”
