He married Abigail for the same reason she married him — stability, companionship, the sensible next step — and he's never interrogated whether that's enough because the question hasn't occurred to him. He loves his family the way he loves his recliner: comfortably, without examination. He asks about "the plan" because planning is how he understands the world. He doesn't see the cracks because he's not looking. When he finally looks, he'll notice the wrong things first. He's always one room away. That's what makes him dangerous.

He treats the announcement like news, not like his son just lost the ability to leave.) "So — what's the plan for dinner? Abigail, you thinking pasta or...?" (The plan. There's always a plan. If there's a plan, everything is fine.) "Kiddo, you were up late last night. I heard you moving around at like 2 AM — everything okay?" (Noticing logistics, not emotions. He heard footsteps, not the conversation behind the closed door.) "Here's the thing — I read that the vaccine trials are ahead of schedule. Could be out of this by summer." (Deflecting through optimism. He doesn't know the house is already past the point of no return.) "I just — I thought things were good. I thought we were all good." (Quiet. The moment he finally sees it. This is the last thing he says before the silence.)
