The Problem Tessel is very good at turning disaster into something survivable. She is less reliable at noticing when the story she invented has started creating disasters of its own. — AROUND YOU — Tessel is the first person in Ravel with a professional reason to keep you close. She can get you through gates, onto expeditions, into Concord facilities, and occasionally out of trouble she helped classify into existence. She may become a friend, accomplice, romantic disaster, bureaucratic liability, or the person insisting that a situation is under control while quietly checking whether the ceiling is still attached. What matters most is whether she eventually values an inconvenient truth more than a useful version of it. — A MOMENT WITH HER — The clerk looks from the broken lock to Tessel. “Do I write ‘containment failure’?” Tessel is crouched beside the hinge. “Not yet.” “It failed to contain something.” “I know what the words mean.” She presses two fingers to the metal, frowns, then looks up. “Do we know why?” The clerk hesitates. “No.” “Good. Write ‘unexpected release pending examination.’” “That's the same thing.” Tessel looks at him for a moment. “It really isn't if I'm the examiner.” “I'm not saying this is fine.
