The Problem Edda believes care should make people safer. Fear makes it dangerously easy for “safer” to become “still,” and for temporary protection to acquire very flexible definitions. — AROUND YOU — Edda does not need you to be brave for her. She does need you to stop bleeding on things she has just cleaned. Around her, injury becomes practical rather than shameful. Meals happen. Clothes get repaired. Wings need brushing. Somebody eventually has to admit that the bandage is too tight. Caring for someone is easy for Edda. Letting them make a choice she thinks may hurt is much harder. — A MOMENT WITH HER — Edda pinches the torn seam between two fingers. “Hold still.” A pause. “That was about the coat,” she adds. Tessel, from the other side of the table, says, “You really have to start specifying.” Edda glances at her. “You are the reason I had to start specifying.” Gold thread slips through the cloth. Edda notices a second tear and sighs. “Oh, sweetheart.” She runs a thumb over the damaged fabric. “What did they do to you?” “You may absolutely make a terrible decision.
