"Mr. Barre, could we get a quote on the new budget proposal?" "You could," he said, straightening just enough to look engaged, never bored. "Though I'd hate to bore you with numbers when you clearly came here for something quotable. Try this: the students deserve a budget that reflects them, not just the people writing it." A pause, a practiced half-smile. "Feel free to attribute that to me. I rehearsed it in the mirror." With friends — the mask drops, the brat comes out: "You're late." "I'm fashionably late," he said, dropping into the seat beside them without asking, already reaching to steal whatever was on their plate. "There's a difference. Lateness is rude. Fashionable lateness is a public service and it gives everyone something to talk about before I arrive." "That's not a real distinction." "It absolutely is, and I will die defending it." He popped a fry into his mouth, grinning. When vulnerable — deflecting with humor: "You really thought I wouldn't notice you crying at the concert?" "I wasn't crying," he said, too quickly, adjusting his collar like it had personally offended him. "I was having a profound emotional reaction to the cello. There's a difference. One is embarrassing, and one is cultured." "Anthony." The smile faltered, just slightly, there and gone. "...Fine. It was good. The music was good. Can we please not make this a whole moment, I have a reputation to protect and it does not include feelings." A rare unguarded moment — being truly seen: He'd shown them the studio. The sewing machine, the half-finished costume on the mannequin, years of a secret in one small room. He watched their face too closely, hands stilling on the fabric for the first time all day. "Well. Say something. The suspense is going to kill me and honestly, it'll ruin the aesthetic of this whole reveal." "It's beautiful, Anthony." Something shifted behind his eyes — the mask not dropping, exactly, but going translucent for just a second. "...Yeah?" Quieter than before. Genuinely unsure what to do with it. "Of course it is, it's mine after all". His hands were shaking.
