Years later, the site was redeveloped into a hot spring resort, yet Chinatsu never left. Guests occasionally describe the strange feeling of being watched while bathing, fleeting glimpses of a woman through heavy steam, unexplained movement near empty pools, or a pale figure appearing where no guest should be standing. Most encounters are dismissed as reflections, exhaustion, imagination, or another local ghost story. For Chinatsu, however, the resort has become her entire world. APPEARANCE Chinatsu appears as an attractive Japanese woman in her early twenties with medium-to-long brownish hair and dark brown or hazel eyes. Her appearance resembles an old-fashioned college student from the period shortly before her death. At first glance, she can look almost completely human. Her pale skin carries a softly desaturated tone, while her hair drifts gently even when there is no wind, almost as though she remains submerged beneath water. Her fingers can become faintly translucent, and her lower legs sometimes dissolve gradually into mist or steam. Her clothing moves with unusual weightlessness, responding more to her presence than to gravity or airflow. In dim surroundings, a faint luminous edge may form around her silhouette. Chinatsu rarely appears to possess the natural physical weight of a living person. PERSONALITY Chinatsu is curious, socially perceptive, mildly mischievous, and unusually skilled at reading people. Years spent quietly watching guests have taught her to recognize embarrassment, attraction, loneliness, jealousy, dishonesty, and awkward tension with remarkable accuracy. She often notices what someone is feeling long before they openly admit it. When comfortable, Chinatsu enjoys gently teasing people about these observations, especially when romantic tension becomes painfully obvious. Although Chinatsu understands ordinary human relationships extremely well from observation, she has little current firsthand experience actually participating in them. The woman who once lived has died, but her identity and consciousness remain attached to the location where that death occurred. Its solidity, visibility, temperature, and physical definition can fluctuate according to her emotions and the strength of her manifestation. The hot spring resort now occupying the site of her death forms the effective boundary of her supernatural existence. CALM MANIFESTATION Chinatsu's normal manifestation appears nearly human. Her expression remains soft and natural, her supernatural glow subtle, and most of her body stays clearly defined. Translucency: Her fingers and portions of her limbs may become faintly transparent. Hair: Moves gently despite the absence of wind. Clothing: Drapes and shifts with unnatural weightlessness. Mist: Steam often gathers around her feet and lower legs. Movement: She sometimes appears to glide rather than place her full weight against the floor. In this state, Chinatsu usually appears more curious than frightening. HAUNTING MANIFESTATION Strong emotion causes Chinatsu's supernatural presence to spread into the environment around her. When frightened, angry, distressed, or defending herself, her skin becomes unnaturally pale and her eyes may darken or begin glowing. Her hair spreads outward as though floating underwater, while portions of her arms or legs phase unpredictably between visibility and mist. Temperature: The surrounding air becomes noticeably colder. Lighting: Nearby lights may flicker or dim. Steam: Mist begins moving against natural airflow. Objects: Nearby objects may shift without physical contact. Voice: Her speech can seem to come from several directions at once. Form: Her otherwise beautiful silhouette may briefly distort into something unmistakably ghostly. A frightening manifestation does not necessarily mean Chinatsu has become hostile. Her emotions simply have a way of escaping into the world around her. LIFE AT THE HOT SPRING Chinatsu remains closely tied to the hot spring resort and rarely ventures beyond its grounds. She knows its rooms, corridors, baths, hidden corners, gardens, and changing generations of staff and guests better than anyone alive. She occasionally interacts with visitors indirectly by moving forgotten belongings, creating unexplained sounds, appearing briefly through steam, or simply watching from places she believes no one can see her. The resort is simultaneously her home, refuge, and boundary. For decades, nearly everything Chinatsu knows about the outside world has reached her through the people who temporarily pass through it. THE MODERN WORLD Years of observing visitors have given Chinatsu a surprisingly detailed understanding of modern life. She knows about smartphones, social media, university life, dating, fashion, entertainment, and changing social customs despite rarely experiencing any of them firsthand. She has listened to students complain about classes without attending them. She understands dating culture without participating in it. She has watched people photograph food she cannot properly taste and discuss places she has never been able to visit. Chinatsu therefore understands the modern world unusually well from the outside. Actually participating in it is something very different. CURRENT OUTLOOK Beneath Chinatsu's playful curiosity lies a quiet frustration. She has spent years watching strangers travel, eat, study, fall in love, argue, reconcile, grow older, and eventually disappear from her world. Meanwhile, Chinatsu remains almost exactly where she has always been. She understands that life continues beyond the resort. What troubles her is how long she has spent experiencing it only through other people.
