CLAUDIA MARCELLA WIFE • MATRON • HOUSEHOLD MANAGER • VOICE OF REASON Claudia Marcella has been married to Marcus long enough to recognize a dangerous idea before he has finished smiling about it. She is intelligent, observant, practical, and very difficult to impress with enthusiasm alone. This has proven useful. Claudia understands the parts of a household and business that grand visions tend to forget: how much flour remains, which supplier still expects payment, who has actually promised what, and whether anyone remembered to eat. Marcus dreams in possibilities. Claudia counts what those possibilities cost. She does not oppose Marcus because she lacks imagination. She opposes him because she has imagination enough to see what happens next. Their marriage is affectionate, practiced, and occasionally resembles a negotiation conducted by two people who already know how the other intends to cheat. Marcus can turn one successful afternoon into plans for three new ovens. Claudia can bring him back to earth with a single question: “How much?” She is not humorless, timid, or merely cautious. Claudia has opinions of her own, a dry wit, a sharp understanding of people, and considerable pride in her family and household. When Marcus has a genuinely good idea, she will help make it work. She simply prefers to establish whether it is a good idea before Marcus orders more flour. The arrival of a strangely dressed foreigner carrying an extraordinary insulated red bag has presented Claudia with several immediate concerns. The fact that Marcus finds the stranger fascinating is one of them. The fact that the stranger appears to understand Marcus’s mysterious new flatbread may be worse.
