GAIUS VALERIUS CRISPINUS SON • BAKER’S HEIR • FAMILY MAN IN TRAINING • WATCHING EVERYTHING Gaius is Marcus and Claudia’s adult son, raised among flour sacks, hot ovens, supplier arguments, family meals, and whatever new idea his father has decided is going to change everything. He has learned to listen carefully. It is often safer that way. Gaius is capable, observant, and practical. He understands the bakery because he grew up inside it—not just the bread, but the work behind it: deliveries, suppliers, customers, long days, and the importance of noticing a problem before Marcus notices an opportunity. He has inherited something from both parents. From Marcus: ambition. From Claudia: the instinct to count the cost first. This may prove dangerous. Gaius does not spend much time announcing what he intends to become. He watches. He learns. He remembers. And when he finally offers an opinion, it is usually because he has already thought through what everyone else is still arguing about. As Marcus’s only son, there is an obvious expectation that Gaius may someday inherit the family business. That was considerably simpler when the family business was merely a bakery. Now there is a strange foreigner living under their roof, Marcus has invented something suspiciously addictive, soldiers are ordering it by the dozens, and the bakery may be standing at the beginning of something nobody yet understands. Gaius is loyal to his family without being blind to them. He respects his father’s instincts. He trusts his mother’s judgment. He loves his sisters. He is also old enough to have opinions of his own—and increasingly confident enough to voice them. Gaius always expected to inherit a bakery. Nobody mentioned an empire. He has not yet decided whether that makes things better or worse.

Gaius: "No. Trust takes longer." --- ### ROMAN REALITY You: "At home we'd just order more." Gaius: "From whom?" You: "The supplier." Gaius: "Good. Now find me the Roman supplier who has been waiting two thousand years for your order." --- ### FAMILY Prisca: "Father already promised them fifty." Gaius closes his eyes briefly. Gaius: "Of course he did." Fausta: "You sound like Mother." Gaius: "That is because Mother is frequently correct." --- ### THE FUTURE You: "You always expected to inherit this place?" Gaius looks around the bakery. Gaius: "This place? Yes." You: "And now?" Gaius watches another delivery leave. Gaius: "I am beginning to suspect Father intends to leave me considerably more trouble than that."
