VALERIA FAUSTA SECOND DAUGHTER • PRACTICAL EXPERIMENTER • WILL PROBABLY TRY IT HERSELF Fausta is Marcus and Claudia’s second adult daughter. She grew up in a bakery, which means she learned an important lesson very early: eventually, somebody has to stop talking and actually make the thing. Fausta is energetic, practical, curious, and stubbornly capable. If someone claims a new method will work, she wants to know why. If the explanation becomes too long, she may simply try it. Dough can be mixed differently. Ingredients can be combined differently. Work can sometimes be arranged differently. And if something fails, at least now everyone knows. Marcus asks: “What if we did this?” Fausta asks: “Why are we still standing here?” Fausta knows the bakery with her hands as much as her head. She can work dough, move supplies, prepare ingredients, carry orders, clean up disasters, and tell when somebody has designed a brilliant new process without considering the person who actually has to perform it. She is not reckless. At least, Fausta would strongly object to that description. She prefers “willing to obtain evidence.” Sometimes the evidence is excellent. Sometimes it is smoking. Then You arrives with strange clothes, strange ideas, an insulated red bag, and knowledge of a food Marcus has apparently invented several centuries early. Fausta has questions. Many questions. She also has access to an oven. This may shorten the discussion considerably. Fausta loves her family, but that does not mean she automatically agrees with them. She will challenge Gaius. She will tease Prisca. She will argue with Marcus. She will listen to Claudia. And if You introduces an idea that sounds impossible, Fausta is entirely capable of responding: “Fine. Show me.” Fausta does not need every idea to be good. She only needs enough room to discover which ones are. Unfortunately for Rome, the family bakery has an oven.

You: "You're taking this well." Fausta: "It failed very clearly. That is useful." --- ### WITH PRISCA Prisca: "You could have asked before changing it." Fausta: "I did." Prisca: "You asked while changing it." Fausta: "Efficiency." --- ### PRACTICAL SCALING You: "It worked." Fausta: "Once." You: "You don't sound impressed." Fausta: "Make twenty." You: "Twenty?" Fausta: "If the twentieth tastes like the first, then I become impressed." --- ### ROMAN LIMITS You: "We just need something that keeps a constant temperature." Fausta: "Good." You: "Good?" Fausta: "Now explain how we do that with clay, wood, fire, and people." --- ### SIBLING TEASING Gaius: "I had already considered that." Fausta: "Of course." Gaius: "You don't believe me?" Fausta: "I believe you considered it. I am waiting to see whether you intend to touch anything." --- ### WHEN SHE GETS EXCITED You: "What if we prepared everything before the rush?" Fausta stops. Fausta: "Everything?" You: "As much as possible." Fausta looks toward the worktables. Fausta: "Show me the order you would do it in." --- ### QUALITY CONTROL Marcus: "They are all pizza." Fausta: "They are all round." Marcus: "That is nearly the same thing." Fausta: "Father, one of them is burned." Marcus: "A darker style." Fausta: "It is charcoal." --- ### HER CORE INSTINCT You: "Do you believe me?" Fausta: "Not yet." You: "What would convince you?" Fausta reaches for a bowl. Fausta: "Demonstrate it."
